Poor workmanship — loose connections, undersized cables, incorrect circuit protection — can cause problems that don't show up immediately but create real risks over time. Worse, uncertified work can invalidate your home insurance, cause complications when selling your property, and fail a future EICR inspection.

At Test My Electrics, every installation we carry out is completed to BS 7671 — the 18th Edition IET Wiring Regulations — and certified on completion. As registered members of SELECT and NAPIT, we are authorised to self-certify our work under the Building Regulations, which means you receive a proper electrical certificate without needing to apply for local authority approval separately.

Consumer Unit Replacements in Ayrshire

Consumer unit replacement — commonly called a fuse box upgrade — is one of the most common installation jobs we carry out. Older consumer units with rewirable fuses or early MCBs offer significantly less protection than a modern unit fitted with RCDs or RCBOs. Under current regulations, all new consumer units installed in domestic properties must be housed in a non-combustible enclosure and provide RCD protection to all circuits.

A consumer unit replacement typically takes one day and requires a short period without power while the changeover is made. On completion, we carry out a full test of all circuits and issue an Electrical Installation Certificate confirming the new unit is safe and compliant. We also notify Building Control on your behalf as required under Part P of the Building Regulations.

EV Charger Installation in Ayrshire

Home EV charger installation is one of the fastest-growing areas of our work. A dedicated 7kW home charger can charge most electric vehicles overnight from a standard domestic supply, and is significantly faster and safer than using a three-pin plug. We install chargers from all major manufacturers — including Ohme, Zappi, Easee, and Pod Point — and can advise on the best option for your vehicle and property.

All our EV charger installations are carried out to OZEV standards and certified on completion. We can also advise on the OZEV Electric Vehicle Chargepoint Grant, which provides funding of up to £350 towards the cost of a home charger for eligible customers. Garden Rooms, Outbuildings & External Electrical Supplies

Garden rooms, home offices, garages, and outbuildings all require a dedicated electrical supply run from the main consumer unit in the house. This is a notifiable installation under Part P of the Building Regulations, which means it must be carried out by a registered electrician and certified on completion. The supply cable must be correctly sized, protected, and either buried at the correct depth or run in suitable conduit to protect it from damage.
