House Rewiring in Ayrshire — What to Expect and Why It Matters

A full house rewire is one of the most significant electrical projects a homeowner can undertake — and one of the most important. The wiring in a property has a finite lifespan. Rubber-insulated cables from the 1960s and 1970s become brittle and crack over time, exposing live conductors. Aluminium wiring from the same era expands and contracts with temperature changes, causing connections to loosen. Even PVC-insulated wiring from the 1980s may no longer meet current standards for circuit protection and earthing.

At Test My Electrics, we carry out full and partial house rewires across Ayrshire, Glasgow, and the West of Scotland. Every rewire is completed to BS 7671 — the 18th Edition IET Wiring Regulations — and certified with a full Electrical Installation Certificate on completion. As SELECT and NAPIT registered electricians, we self-certify our work under the Building Regulations, so you don't need to apply for separate local authority approval.

How Long Does a House Rewire Take?

The duration of a rewire depends on the size of the property and the scope of work involved. As a general guide, a typical three-bedroom semi-detached house takes between one and three days in total. This can be split in to two stages; for the first fix — the stage where cables are run through the property and back-boxes are fitted. The second fix, where sockets, switches, and light fittings are connected and the consumer unit is installed, takes a further one to two days and is carried out after the property has been re-plastered and redecorated. If you require us to do this separately we are more than happy to, we can also provide the plastering works if you wish.

This works well when renovating a property but not when it is occupied. We work closely with homeowners to plan the rewire around their schedule and needs. The two-stage process means you can complete all the plastering and painting between first and second fix, so the finished installation is completely concealed behind the new décor. We provide a detailed schedule before work begins so you know exactly what to expect at each stage.

Partial Rewires and Targeted Remedial Work

Not every property requires a full rewire. In some cases, only part of the installation is defective — a single circuit with deteriorating insulation, a section of wiring in a kitchen or bathroom that doesn't meet current standards, or an extension that was wired incorrectly by a previous owner. A partial rewire targets only the affected circuits, leaving the rest of the installation in place where it is safe to do so.

We always carry out a thorough assessment before recommending a rewire. If a consumer unit upgrade or targeted remedial work will resolve the issues identified in your EICR, we will say so — we have no interest in recommending more work than is genuinely needed. Where a full rewire is required, we will explain clearly why, and provide a fixed price from the survey so there are no surprises when the invoice arrives.
